I am very happy. I didn’t know the mixture. Now I know what I am giving my cows. Every day I milk 4 kgs more from each of my cows.

Our vision

LishaBora believes in the elimination of poverty through innovation and education in the dairy sector of Kenya. We believe poverty is systemic, and is created by the systems in which farmers operate. We attribute that many of the 1.8 million dairy farmers earn less than $2 USD a day due to the limited options, low quality, and high cost of dairy feed currently available in the market. A much more nutritious and affordable product is possible. LishaBora is disrupting the product distribution model and supply chain of the dairy industry in Kenya. We create dairy feed that is nutritious and affordable in order to raise the amount of milk produced by smallholder dairy farmers. We envision an Africa with a strong dairy sector that not only feeds the communities in which we operate, but an Africa that feeds the world.

Our system

We currently are operating our first, full sized greenhouse where we continue to optimize our yields and internal operations. We plan to scale the business within the year to reach more farmers and have deeper impact on our customers.

Our people

We are fortunate to have driven employees who want to make an impact in their local communities.  The people we work with come from diverse backgrounds and each day contribute to making LishaBora a success.

Our clients

Small-holder dairy farmers are interested to learn more about our product. When entering a new community they are always quick to pose us questions about the product and how it will help in their day to day lives.  Hearing such positive feedback on early trials makes us excited to continue our work in providing them a more nutrient-rich feed product than is currently sold in the market.

Hydroponics is not the only technology being applied as part of our sustainable business development.  Sand filtration has had early success in our pilot-phase for reusing water and creating a full-cycle hydroponic system.  Along the same line, we capture rainwater from the greenhouse roof and use it in our process.  These water capturing and reuse techniques will be vital once we scale the business and during the dry seasons in Kenya.

Although hydroponic technology has existed for a long time, we are constantly adapting it to provide higher yield fodder.  Statistical analyses for yield while adjusting several input variables are just some of the work we're conducting to ensure we are operating at our best capacity.

Current feedstocks

Small-holder dairy farmers currently buy bags of concentrates that they then mix themselves to feed to their cows to provide the required nutritional content. Optimal ratios of mixed concentrates are largely unknown to farmers as the market suppliers are not regulated to meet a certain minimum specification for nutrient value and farmers are held ignorant of best practice.

Complete Feed Solution

Hydroponically-grown fodder has been shown to increase milk production volumes by a minimum of 20% in dairy cows. The higher nutrient and bioavailability help to achieve improved volumes of milk produced. We have a small but growing, and loyal customer base.

impact to farmers

By selling a better product to farmers than what has been traditionally available, accurately measured, farmers are able to achieve a better milk yields. There are roughly 1.8 million small-holder farmers in Kenya who can benefit from the product we sell.  With such a significant market, LishaBora has the ability to make a large impact to improve the lives of many farmers.
